English for Academic Purposes
Do you need to prepare for further study in Australia? Our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course can help you develop the skills and knowledge you need.
The EAP course can help you get ready to study in Australian Technical & Further Education (TAFE), foundation studies courses and university at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Academic English can be very different to the English you use in conversation. It can be difficult to understand the new words and writing style used in academic settings, so preparing yourself for study in English is very important.
There are two levels in our EAP course:
- EAP 1 (B1 to B1+)
- EAP 2 (B1+ to B2)
Each level runs for 10 weeks. When you finish EAP 2, you can continue your academic studies in our IELTS Preparation program for 10 weeks.
In EAP, you will learn not only skills in the four main areas of reading, listening, writing and speaking, but also study skills:
Reading skills for academic purposes
- introduction to academic texts
- techniques for efficient reading, including skimming for main ideas and scanning for specific information
- analysing and describing graphs, diagrams and charts
- predicting content from context
- understanding the writer’s tone, style and purpose
- extending your academic vocabulary for further studies
Listening skills for academic purposes
- listening skills for lectures and tutorials
- note-taking strategies and skills
Writing skills for academic purposes
- summarising and paraphrasing, writing essays and reports on a range of academic genres
- planning, drafting and editing skills
- referencing skills
Speaking skills
- oral presentation skills
- collaborative speaking skills such as active listening and turn-taking
- expressing, explaining and supporting a point of view confidently
Introduction to study skills
- developing effective study habits
- time management
- effective collaboration with peers
- research skills, including sourcing and evaluating academic materials
- develop familiarity with learning management systems used in further studies
EAP follows the Navitas English curriculum for Academic English 1 and Academic English 2
